Welcome to the Officer Down Project

This website is the home of Officer Down 2012, Officer Down 2013, and Officer Down 2014.  These are ongoing projects that examine line-of-duty deaths to inform law enforcement officers about the most cutting-edge training and references available on these incidents.  Did you know that over 128 police officers have been killed by firearms in the line of duty since January 1, 2011?  These officers were not just statistics.  They were real people, like you and me, who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others.

                            Do you know their stories?

I have researched each and every one of these incidents and have written two books about these incredible heroes.  My books on fallen officers are called Officer Down 2012 and Officer Down 2013.  I am now working on Officer Down 2014 for release in summer 2014.  Did you know:
  • The most dangerous activity for law enforcement in 2012 was vehicle-related enforcement.  Nearly half of all police officers who were killed by firearms were confronting a suspect in a vehicle.
  • Six female officers were killed by firearms in 2012, including Memphis Officer Martoiya Lang, who was the mother of four young daughters.  Although female officers make up only 10% of police nationwide, they represented 15% of all officers killed by gunfire in 2012.
  • Most police officers (70%) who were killed by gunfire in 2012 were killed by a single, handgun-wielding shooter.  Half of the shooters did not survive.

I invite you to take a look at the information available on this site.  You can check out training tools and books, read an excerpt from my books, or comment on my blog.  Share your feedback.  Help me add to what I have learned about the officers, tactics and training possibilities in my study.

Officer Down 2013 is a new book that examines thirty-nine new line of duty deaths due to firearms in 2012.  It is now available on this site.

Fallen officers have a message for us.  Train well.  Fight hard.  Survive.
