The Dynamic Police Training website was developed to inform law enforcement officers about the most cutting-edge training and references available on line-of-duty deaths due to firearms in the past year.  Do you know their stories?

I invite you to take a look at the information available on this site.  You can check out training tools and books, read an excerpt, or comment on my blog.  Share your feedback.  Help me add to what I have learned about the officers, tactics and training possibilities in my study.

Officer Down 2013 is a new book that examines 2012 line of duty deaths due to firearms. OD13 will be available for pre-order in March 2013.

2011 Line-of-Duty Deaths

In October 2011, I began researching line-of-duty deaths due to firearms to answer two important questions:
  • Why were these officers killed?
  • What can we learn from their sacrifices?
The answers might surprise you.   These officers were not complacent, "too nice," afraid to use force, poorly-trained or "past their prime."  They were brave and outstanding cops who did exactly what many well-prepared cops might have done in the same circumstances.  For example:
  • Have you ever radioed out on a pedestrian stop?  Officer Andrew Dunn marked out and named the offender he recognized by sight to the dispatcher.  The suspect shot and killed him when Officer Dunn told him to take his hands out of his pockets.  How many times have you told suspects to do that?
  • Have you ever stopped to help a stranded motorist on the freeway?  Deputy James Paugh circled back on his motorcycle to help a couple who were inside a parked car on the shoulder of the freeway.  The male suspect shot and killed the officer with an M-4 before killing himself.   How often do we walk into or drive up on situations that are different than they appeared?
  • Have you ever  responded to a shots fired call?  Deputy Suzanne Hopper and Officer Eric Zapata did just that and they were killed by suspects armed with long guns.  Neither shooter survived.  How often do we think: this is just another bullshit call?

If you have ever worked street patrol, then you have walked in these officers' shoes and, but for the grace of God, you are still alive.  Every police officer  should know their stories.  Check out the one-of-a-kind book Officer Down 2012 and learn what you don't know about line-of-duty deaths in 2011.

What is Officer Down 2012?

Officer Down 2012 is a book and a seminar that examines all the factors involved in 60 line-of-duty deaths in 2011, including:
  • officer and offender characteristics;
  • history of offenders;
  • specifics of the enforcement activity at the time of the offense;
  • patterns of injury to officers and offenders;
  • statements made; and
  • type of weapons used.

I have developed training materials for law enforcement officers that address the lessons learned from the sacrifices of fallen officers in 2011.  OD12 is now available.   Click here to order.

Book: Survival Training for Law Enforcement (2011)

Law enforcement officers are increasingly at risk of violence, injury, and death at the hands of the citizens they are assigned to protect. During the past thirty years, there has been a massive upsurge in line-of-duty deaths from intentional violent acts.

Based on the most sophisticated system in the world, Survival Training for Law Enforcement: The Israeli Combat System is a training guide for law enforcement officers that offers a new perspective on training for job-related dangerous tasks.

Co-authored with Israeli military expert and law enforcement trainer B.K. Blankchtein, this is must-have for the tactically-minded police officer or trainer.  Check out B.K.'s work at www.masadatactical.com.

The book is available exclusively at the Training Tabs page on this website.  Click here to go there.

Book: Dynamic Police Training (2010)

As police work has become increasingly professionalized, police trainers have had to adapt their methods and learn new ways of thinking about delivering effective training.  My 2010 book, Dynamic Police Training (DPT), offers a roadmap for how to develop training programs that maximize content and provide interactivity with and between students.  A set of templates for trainers to use in development of lesson plans and scenario-based training for police recruits is included.

I was recently contacted by a trainer in Australia who, in 2011, successfully implemented suggestions outlined in Dynamic Police Training in their basic police trainee program in Brisbane.  Wow!  It is truly a privilege to be able to have my ideas studied in such far-flung places.

The book is available at the Books tab and online at www.amazon.com.

Fallen officers have a message for us.  Train well.  Fight hard.  Survive.
