IADLEST 2013 in Portland, Oregon was a great conference. We were privileged to be invited to speak on our research on line-of-duty deaths in 2012. Officer Down 2013 received a positive reception and I would like to thank all of the IADLEST members who attended our session.
The links to IADLEST member-only materials were provided to all who attended. I hope these materials will be shared liberally in the law enforcement community with those who have a need to know-- police officers and trainers across the nation. If you need access to these materials, email me.
I had the opportunity to speak with quite a few leaders in the field during my stay in Portland. It was an uncommon gift to have the wife of Sgt. Mark Dryer (EOW 7/3/1993) attend my Officer Down 2013 course and offer her unique perspective. Her husband was killed by a drunk driver, which is just as difficult as losing a police officer to gun-related violence like the officers in my study. She now serves as a police training manager in Arizona, and brings her tragic experience into her dedicated work with others to keep officers safe.
It was a privilege and an honor to be able to speak with such a great group of folks. I look forward to the opportunity to return next year for IADLEST 2014.
