On April 12, 2012, Chief Michael Maloney went to oversee one last warrant service in his community, where he had faithfully served for twenty-six years. When gunfire erupted inside the house, Chief Maloney rescued an injured officer from the porch of the residence. He was then shot and killed in the line of duty by the armed suspect just nine days before he was scheduled to retire.
On November 9, 2012, Officer Jim Davies, assigned to a warrants squad, volunteered to work a second patrol shift to cover a manpower shortage. He was killed by friendly fire in the line of duty while searching for a prowler,
On December 24, 2012, Sgt. Jimmie Norman turned down an offer for another officer to work his holiday shift and reported for duty. He was killed during a traffic stop by an armed man.
Would you be willing to die for your friends like Sgt. Chapin and Officer Davies? Would you serve as faithfully until your last day like Sgt. Norman? It is men and women like these who are the real heroes of our times. I believe enough in the importance of fallen officers to write a book each year about their sacrifices. 99 officers in the past two years have been killed by gunfire in incidents like these. All of them should be remembered and honored.
Thanks for reminding us of these heroes!
